Make Your Own Adobo

Adobo is an extremely popular seasoning mix in Puerto Rican cuisine. Indeed, you'd be hard pressed to cook a complete Puerto Rican meal without it! From rice to meats to salads, so many recipes call for it. And although most people just buy their adobo from the supermarket, its super easy to make from the comforts of your own home. So if you want to avoid the preservatives in store-bought adobo, or if you just want to avoid buying it altogether, we've got a great recipe for you!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup garlic powder

1/4 cup salt

1 tbs oregano

1 tbs ground black pepper

1 tsp cumin

1/2 tsp turmeric

Adobo generally consists of six ingredients: garlic powder, salt, turmeric, oregano, black pepper, and cumin. Once you’ve got your spices in hand, go ahead and measure them out.

I’ve shared the amounts I use, but feel free to adjust the ratios as you see fit. If you like a little more pepper, add a little more pepper. Want a little less salt, add less salt. Just keep experimenting until you’ve got it where you want.

Once you’ve measured out your ingredients, add them to a large bowl and mix together briskly, to combine thoroughly. Once mixed, store your adobo in an air-tight container, to protect it from the humidity. And that’s it. Like I said, easy!
